Depression Treatment

A common and debilitating disorder

In 2017-2018, The Australian bureau of statistics, found that one in ten people (10.4%) had depression, or feelings of depression.

It is common to think that your loved one is experiencing depression due to their level of alcohol or drug use, however most commonly, depression is the reason that people are overusing alcohol and drugs. Individual that present at drug and alcohol rehabs are nearly always masking an underlying mental health condition, a phenomena known as self-medicating.

If you or your loved one is experiencing a substance use problem, they are more than likely experiencing a mental health issue and are unaware of it.

Causes of depression

There are a number of reasons that contribute to someone experiencing depression. Apart from biological reasons such a brain chemistry, the primary reason people experience depression are family dynamics, environmental problems, life events and stress. When considering why you or your loved one is experiencing depression it’s important to look at what has changed in their environment, or have they been experiencing significant stress.

When treating depression The Bay team will conduct an analysis of the reasons for the depression, or the function of depression in a person’s life. Depression can have a number of functions, however, one of the most common causes of depression is a response to stressful life events, where the brain and nervous system is having difficulty processing and coping with the stress. The purpose of depression is the body’s natural response to complex emotional states that the brain is finding difficult to process and move through. Depression allows the brain to slow down and start the process of disentangling complex emotions and provide meaning for challenging life events such as trauma, and grief and loss.

Your tailored depression treatment program.

The Bay team will tailor your program to include a range of evidence-based therapeutic methods that include traditional Western psychological and integrative medical practice, and Eastern mindfulness techniques.

Because depression is about the whole person, not just your thoughts and feelings, we include holistic treatments such as relaxation, massage, acupuncture, yoga and meditation.

Your motivation is key to change?

When working with your therapist you will learn that in order to be successful in your recovery, sometimes you will be encouraged to surrender to the healing process.

For many of us this can be confused with not trying or giving up. However, surrender means we stop resisting our intuition and start listening to what guides us internally. We stop trying to control outcomes with loved ones and placing unrealistic expectations on ourselves.

We learn to understand the inner critic that drives us, or paralyses us, and take steps to manage this part of us rather than this part managing our actions and relationships.

What our guests say

I have attended other programs and felt overlooked due to the needs of the more complex clients that were in the program. At The Bay I was the focus of the team and gained a greater understanding of my situation… to make the changes required to live the life I wanted.

Having a psychology background I was very particular about what I was looking for, I didn’t want group therapy because I was at a point where I knew I needed individual therapy… it has been five months since I left The Bay, it has changed my life.

I have been in treatment before but couldn’t seem to achieve the changes I wanted. The compassion shown to me by the incredible team at The Bay has taught me to set boundaries with others, allowed me to re-align my expectations of myself and others and live the life I have been craving.

The compassion shown to me by the incredible team at the bay has taught me to set boundaries with others, allowed me to re-align my expectations of myself and others and finally live the life I have been craving for many years.

My wife found The Bay after doing a lot of research looking at programs all over the world. Treatment centres here in the US are very different! My life has changed in so many ways and I continue to stay clean and sober, thank you for all you have done.
